Bishop
The Bishop was the most popular chess piece I made---one
was bought for the retiring bishop of the Diocese of
North Carolina. Three feet high (about 1 meter) and
mostly made of sheet steel, his mitre is an old garden
trowel, and the lace on his cuffs are electric motor
parts. I drew hands on thin sheet steel and cut them
out. His jaw is an old bearing cover turned upside down
and welded to a piece of pipe. The eyes are made of
washers. Embroidery on his robes was simply done with
steel welding bead.
